Celebrating the commissioning of the first Federal Lighthouse…
It was on the Seventh Day of August in 1789 that Congress approved an Act for the establishment and support of lighthouse, beacons, buoys and public piers. In Celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the signing of the Act and the commissioning of the first Federal lighthouse, in 1989 Congress passed a resolution which designated August 7 as National Lighthouse Day.
The Lighthouse Act of 1789 was approved by Congress, ensuring the upkeep and repair of Lighthouses, Beacons, Buoys, and Public Piers “shall be defrayed out of the treasury of the United States.”
National Lighthouse Day was first celebrated 200 years later when President Ronald Reagan signed Senate Judiciary Resolution 306 of the 100th Congress into law.
I have several lighthouse photographs available on a variety of substrates (Prints, Canvas, Metal, Acrylic, Matted & Framed) in my Gallery at Pictorem. These are all available with Free Ground Shipping throughout the United States and Canada.

It seems I missed National Lighthouse day, what a shame. I do enjoy a good light house pic as well, what a lovely selection you have.
Thank you Annie. I often miss some unique and interesting “recognition” days. I plan to start creating short articles for those where I have appropriate images.
A perennial favorite – a photo of a lighthouse! And these are some great images to illustrate that. I missed this designated day as well – but I might go back to my own lighthouses and perhaps try some digital art with them!
Thank you, Steve. Lighthouses are, indeed, fun to photograph and also to work with in post processing.
Lighthouses. One subject I do not have in my own portfolio. Not very many in Pennsylvania for some reason, lol 😉 Hopefully I can get a couple images during my Wildwood vacation later this month. Wonderful photos, Bill!
I just created a Pictorem account a couple days ago and will start uploading shortly. I still have to find my way around a bit.
Jason, I also like covered bridges but, alas, there are none in my area. You have several wonderful examples so I suppose I’ll have to visit your neck of the woods to find some subjects.
re: Pictorem – a fine company. I suggest you upload only two images as soon as possible. Then you can use them to explore the site and the admin area without worrying about managing a new gallery. Then, when you are comfortable, begin uploading your wall art photography.
Wow! That’s a great lighthouse collection and so many more in your gallery!
Thank you so much, Sharon.
There are two structures that I find are defining of coastal communities. Lighthouses and Fishing Piers. Each one has its own personality and character. I do dearly love lighthouses. For someone living on the coast I don’t photograph nearly enough of them. I must rectify that! Lovely article and images.
Thank you, Bob. There are a couple more around here where I (also) should do more photography. I also want to get my drone up around the one near our home. My initial plan is to photograph it from the air, at about the same elevation as the lens, with the sun rising over the ocean behind it.
